6th Grade Literacy Essentials/Connections 2017-2018
Welcome! This is the site where I will publish the weekly Agenda, homework assignments, projects, and information for parents.
We have had a wonderful beginning to the school year! This week we will begin the new EL curriculum. Our focus will be on understanding class protocols and learning targets. Each student has been given an envelpoe that will be used to keep their workbook and novel. They will have homework this week which will be to read Chapter 1 in the novel "Lightening Thief".
What a great first week! The students are excited and ready to have a year full of learning and increasing our skills.
We are beginning with a Mythology Unit. This week we will also begin silent and sustained reading for 15 minutes at the beginning of class.
This week our learning targets will focus on citing text evidence, characterization, and using context clue strategies from the novel The Lightening Thief. Homework for the week will include reading, writing, and responding to literature as well as practice with sentence structure and context clues. If your child brings home a plastic pocket folder, then he/she has homework for the next day.
This week we will continue with Mythology. Last week each student took a reading assessment on Moby Max and was given a reading level to begin the program. They will have time in class each week to do Moby Max and Silent Sustained Reading.
The class will also be doing context clues activities.
This week our learning targets will focus on characterization, point of view, and citing text evidence. There will be an assessment on Wed. or Thursday. Students will be asked to use text evidence to write about events in the novel.
Homework: Continue reading The Lightening Thief. If your child brings home a pocket folder that has the novel and the workbook, this means he/she has homework.
This week the students will be exploring more myths. They will be creating a Mythology Banner to check for comprehension of the myths. The emphasis will be on characterization and point of view.
Homework will be on Monday, due on Friday. It is a grammar packet.
